A sprawling anti-corruption investigation, Lava Jato (Car Wash), has dominated headlines in Brazil for the past five years. It ended political careers, jailed company bosses and helped elect low-level right-wing congressman Jair Bolsonaro to become Brazil's president last year. During the campaign, he railed against corruption, but the investigation itself disappeared from the headlines. It returned last month following the arrest of former president Michel Temer. Prosecutors say he ran a scheme to embezzle as much as 1.8 billion reais ($427 million) over more than 40 years, including during his 2016-18 presidency. Mr Temer denies the allegations. A judge released him while the investigation continued.
